FAW Premier Cup

The FAW Premier Cup was actually a wooden trophy!
With more than £300,000 in prize money and £100,000 to the winners, the BBC-sponsored competition was the most lucrative in domestic Welsh football.

Launched as the Invitation Cup in 1997/8, the 'wooden ball' changed its name to the FAW Premier Cup the following season.
The BBC-sponsored competition traditionally featured the top seven placed clubs from the Welsh Premier, joined by the best placed 'exiled' club from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County, and the Welsh Cup winners (who are exempt until the last eight).
Games were played home and away in mini-leagues until 2004/5, when a new format was introduced on a straight knockout basis.
Only two Welsh Premier clubs have ever won the trophy, which has been largely dominated by Wrexham.
Barry Town were successful in 1998/9, beating the Red Dragons 2-1 in the final, and The New Saints came out on top in 2006/7, beating Cardiff City in the last four and Newport County in the final.
The Exiles went one better in 2008, beating Llanelli in the final, the last to be played after the BBC announced it was ending its 11-year sponsorship of the competition.

Newport County lifted the cup for the first time in 2008 [Newport County photo].

The competition will comprise five rounds of knock-out, one-legged matches to be played to a conclusion on that day/night, by extra time and penalties if necessary.

Rhyl, Llanelli, Welshpool and Newport County entered the competition in the second round.
Cardiff City, Swansea City, Wrexham and The New Saints joined the competition in the quarter-finals.

The New Saints became only the second Welsh Premier side to win the BBC-sponsored FAW Premier Cup, which was again played in a straight knockout format in 2006/7.
The competition features the top 10 placed clubs from the Welsh Premier, joined by the two best placed 'exiled' clubs - Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County, the Welsh Cup winners plus the three English League clubs - Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham. As Welsh Cup winners Rhyl finished in the top 10, the 11th placed league club (Porthmadog) is included also.
Merthyr Tydfil failed to meet the minimum 500 Lux floodlight criteria and were replaced by NEWI Cefn Druids, as the next best-placed Welsh Premier clubs, Connah's Quay (at their temporary Cae-y-Castell home) and Caernarfon also failed the floodlight test.

Rhyl reached the final after beating Swansea City in the last four but, in a season when they swept all before them in other competitions, the Lillies had to settle for the runners-up cheque, losing 4-1 to Wrexham at Belle Vue. The League outfit had knocked out TNS 2-0 in the other semi-final.
