Scrap for survival in the Alliance
Friday 14 August 2009
Dave CunnahFRIDAY night's clash between Gresford Athletic and Ruthin Town may be a low-key curtain raiser, but the Cymru Alliance is set for an interesting season.
For the first time ever since its formation, all three feeder leagues have had their champions promoted - Bethesda, Llangollen and Berriew.
But the restructing of the Welsh football pyramid means the 17 clubs are scrapping to survive in the league in 12 months' time.
Buckley Town, Holyhead Hotspur, Llangefni Town and Llandudno are expected to be the main front-runners for the title, with the Bucks hosting the men from Maesdu Park on Saturday.
New boys Llangollen have rebuilt the side that won the Welsh National League, with a host of players transferring from Lex XI, including talented midfield supremo Gareth Rhys Roberts and a large crowd is expected at Tower Fields for their baptism against Llanfairpwll.
Meanwhile, the Lawmen have signed experienced Welsh Premier midfielder Dave Cunnah (pictured) from Bala, along with Shaun Jones, Sean Dodd and Darren Hignett.
Buckley boss Gareth Thomas has taken most of his squad from Mynydd Isa following their demise, with ex-Wingmaker Phil Molyneux the latest addition.
Holyhead Hotspur play Mold Alexandra, who have signed Steve Hughes from Caersws, while Llangefni Town host Flint Town United whose manager Paul Davies has signed forward Alan Dawson.
