Fifth spell at the Traeth for Roberts
Saturday 11 September 2010
Paul RobertsPORTHMADOG hope that much-travelled Welsh Premier striker Paul Roberts will help end their early-season goal famine after returning to The Traeth for a fifth spell with the club where he started his career.
Released by Newtown at the end of August, Roberts is expected to be included in the squad for Port's Welsh Cup-tie at Carno on Saturday.
His goal scoring exploits at Porthmadog in 1996/7 resulted in a £15,000 move to Wrexham where he gained first team experience and Welsh international honours.
He then joined Bangor after a brief spell back at Port and scored City's winner in the 2000 Welsh Cup Final and the 2002/3 Uefa Cup win over Sartid Smederevo.
A Welsh Under-21 international, Roberts held the appearances record at Bangor before moving to Rhyl at the start of 2007.
But he made just two starts for the Lillies and was released at the end of May, returning to Porthmadog again and then signing for Welshpool Town a year later.
After resisting a move back to Porthmadog in the January 2009 transfer window, he did return to The Traeth in the summer.
However, a few months later he departed again to join Newtown where he notched eight goals from 19 appearances last season in a career total of 147 from 288 (+59), which puts him seventh on the Welsh Premier's all-time goal scorers list.
