| End of the line for Williams-Cooke |
| Monday 10 January 2011 |
RICHARD Williams-Cooke has announced his retirement from football after suffering a recurrence of a knee injury.Currently with Cefn Druids in the Alliance, the 30-year-old had been sidelines since October apart from a brief substitute appearance but has been suffering from knee problems for the last two seasons. It had looked likely that Williams-Cooke was set to return to the fold, but this latest setback has led to him to call time on his playing career. "Due to the constant problems with my knee over the last two years I have decided to retire," he says. "I have to think of the long term damage I am doing to it and my job and home life. I keep breaking down when coming back and ending up back at square one and seem no nearer to a solution to getting my knee sorted. "I keep putting pressure on myself to come back early and getting my hopes up but it is really frustrating." Williams-Cooke captained Denbigh Town to the Welsh Alliance title in 2006/7, impressing Newtown when playing and scoring twice against them in the Welsh Cup. He spent a year at Latham Park scoring six goals from 29 (+8) Welsh Premier appearances, but left to join Bala Town in January 2009, before returning to Denbigh and then joining Druids last June. Earlier in his career, he spent a year at Everton's Centre of Excellence and also had a trial at Burnley, with other former clubs including Ruthin Town, Colwyn Bay YMCA, Trefnant Village, Lex XI and Chirk. |
