CEFN Druids have responded to criticism of Saturday's Welsh Cup fourth round postponement which appeared in the Llanelli Star,Llanelli manager Andy Legg said "There's nothing we could do about it, we were nearly there. "The players left at 7.30 in the morning and I got told when I was by Oswestry." Druids' chairman Brian Mackie (pictured) responded: "Our groundsman inspected the pitch on Friday evening and at that time there was no frost in the ground and with an overnight forecast of -2 he did not think it would be a problem. "However the temperature fell to -5 overnight and I personally met the groundsman at 9.15 am on Saturday morning and because of hard conditions in the goalmouths and down the centre of the pitch we asked our secretary to arrange a pitch inspection. "At this time both sides of the pitch (around 50%) was playable. We then contacted Llanelli, who at the time were in Builth Wells, and informed them that there might be a problem. "The referee inspected the pitch around 10.00 am and based on conditions at that time he said it was dangerous. Our secretary contacted (FAW competitions head) Andrew Howard who told us and Llanelli to give the game every chance. "However Llanelli wanted a decision there and then on the prospects of the game going ahead and the referee rightly informed Andrew Howard that prospects were slim. The game was then postponed. "This turned out to be the correct decision in hindsight but Cefn Druids were not in any way to blame as Andy Legg suggests. "If the pitch had been inspected on Friday night it would have been given the green light and we would not have had a pitch inspection again till the match referee arrived. "Everything was done to save Llanelli the expense of a wasted journey. I personally was in touch with Andy Legg throughout the proceedings and if he was by Oswestry as he stated then he was only 15 minutes away and could have come and spoken to the referee and seen the pitch for himself," adds Mackie. |
