| 'Pool target Airbus keeper as Jones leaves |
| Thursday 03 March 2011 |
WELSHPOOL have targeted Airbus UK Broughton and former Swansea City youngster Callum Hawthorne as a replacement for goalkeeper Dave Jones, who has signed for his home village club Guilsfield.A former Shrewsbury Town trainee, 21-year-old Jones made 74 Welsh Premier appearances for Newtown between 2007 and 2010 and the 'Pool skipper made his final appearance for the Maesydre outfit in Tuesday night's 4-2 home defeat at the hands of Rhos Aelwyd. Jones will provide competition at the Recreation Ground for another former Robins' stopper, Dave Maguire. "He is a young lad with a lot of potential so it is a great signing for Guilsfield," said manager Russ Cadwallader. "He lives in the village and wanted to play for the village. "He has shown himself to be a capable goalkeeper and is also loud and a decent organiser of defences, which is always something you look for in a goalkeeper. "At the end of the day it is another young local player signing for Guilsfield and that can only be positive for the future of the club." Hawthorne, 21, has also spent time at Fulham and earned a call-up to the Wales Under-19s, joining the Wingmakers last July and appearing five times in the domestc top flight. His chances of first-team football at The Airfield have been reduced since the arrival of Nikki Lee-Bulmer from QPR. Photo: Dave Jones in action for Welshpool at Cefn Druids recently. |
