Late comeback as Rhos win the NEWFA Cup
Wednesday 18 May 2011
Rhos AelwydRHOS Aelwyd lifted the NEWFA Cup with a 3-2 win over Venture at Wrexham's Racecourse Ground on Tuesday night.
But the Welsh National League underdogs came within five minutes of producing a shock result against their Huws Gray Alliance opponents.
Venture took the lead in the 17th minute when skipper Mark Brown fired an unstoppable shot from 25 yards that caught Rhos keeper Simon Williams off his line.
Neil Evans and Levi Roberts both hit the woodwork in the first-half and the misses proved costly when Aelwyd levelled on 51 minutes through leading scorer Mike Burke.
But Venture hit back on 66 minutes when Evans ghosted through a static Rhos defence before firing home.
The game was turned on its head when Kevin Fitzsimmons struck a low shot into the bottom corner to equalise again and, two minutes from time, Burke crossed for sub Matty Holmes to head the winner.
