| Griffiths turns down Newtown opportunity |

CEFN Druids and former Welshpool Town boss Huw Griffiths will not be moving into the vacant managerial hotseat at Newtown. Left in the lurch at the weekend when Darren Ryan quit just 17 days into his second tenure at Latham Park, the Robins approached the highly-regarded Griffiths, who holds the Uefa Pro badge as well as boasting a Sports Science degree, and led the Ancients to third place in the Huws Gray Alliance last season. But Griffiths told the Druids' website that, after speaking to his chairman and vice-chairman, he had decided to stay put. "Newtown is a fantastic club and I had good times there when I played for them. But I think Druids has the potential to be a bigger club and to be better," he said. "We have got a fantastic team, with several of them still in the developmental stage. I think we are on the verge of something big at the club. "I believe we can compete at the top of this league and push to be at least mid-table in the Welsh Premier League. "At this moment of my career I feel there is still a job to be done at Cefn Druids. I have the backing of the board and am pleased to be staying." The sticking point for Griffiths over a move to Latham Park was believed to be his desire to take his own coaching staff to the club, something which the Robins' board rejected. Now Newtown, who say they have been "impressed by the quality of applications", may be forced to look south for a new boss, with ex-Haverfordwest County manager Derek Brazil among the frontrunners. |
