Rhyl top again despite losing home record
Monday 14 November 2011
Rhyl v PorthmadogRHYL returned to the top of the Huws Gray Alliance on goal difference, despite being held to a home draw by Porthmadog in only the third game ever to be staged on a Sunday in the league.
The Lilywhites, who had netted 32 times in their previous six home outings, were forced to surrender a 100% home record by an outstanding Port defence, although Greg Strong's side hit the woodwork twice in front of a crowd of 402 at Belle Vue.
Rhyl almost scored in the fifth minute when James Gambino headed Mike Pritchard's cross against a post, but moments later home keeper Ben Jones had to produce a great stop from a Darren Thomas power drive.
From the resulting corner, Craig Roberts drilled the ball into the box but no visiting player was able to get a touch and Jones collected safely.
Ryan Williams also hit the woodwork with a curling shot but Rhyl were reduced to 10-men when veteran defender Mark Powell was sent-off for a second caution 10 minutes from time.
