Late goal settles the Deeside derby
Tuesday 27 December 2011
Gary O'TooleIT took a late goal to settle the Deeside derby on Boxing day as Gap Connah's Quay sealed top spot in the Huws Gray Alliance at Flint's Cae-y-Castell.
With virtually the first chance of the game after 20 minutes, Nomads took the lead when a shirt tug on Gary O'Toole (pictured) led to a penalty and the marksman stepped-up to send keeper Adam McGhee the wrong way.
Tempers flared when Craig Jones clashed with Simon Thelwell, who was shown red for a two-footed tackle, but the 10-man Silkmen enjoyed some domination in the second period.
After several scares in the visitors' goalmouth, the hosts hit the woodwork and Alan Hooley cleared off the line, but Shaun Beck finally snatched an equaliser with a lob into the far corner.
But the parity lasted only two minutes before Nomads won a free-kick on the edge of the Flint box and substitute Rob Jones sent the set-piece beyong McGhee for the winner.
