Mooney on brink of Robins' pro deal
Saturday 14 January 2012
Paul MooneyRHYL midfielder Paul Mooney is close to signing a professional contract with Football League Two outfit Swindon Town after being picked to go through a week of boot camp at the club.
Mooney impressed Robins' boss Paolo Di Canio when he played in the final of Samsung’s nationwide Win A Pro Contract competition.
The 19-year-old, who has been with the Lilywhites for the past two seasons, reached the final after making it through a series of regional trials.
He lined-up with 10 other finalists to take on a Swindon Town XI at the County Ground last month.
Mooney switched teams at half-time, giving him a chance to play alongside Town stars such as Mehdi Kerrouche and former AC Milan defender Alberto Comazzi.
"I thought I did okay in the final but I really couldn’t believe it when I found out I’d been picked to train with the Swindon first team," Mooney said.
"I can’t wait to test myself against professional players every day. It’s going to be a really exciting week.
"I’d never played in central defence prior to this competition but I’m enjoying it.
"Hopefully I can keep developing and can show Paolo Di Canio what I’m capable of.
"I can’t put into words what winning a contract with Swindon would mean. I’d probably cry with joy!"
Di Canio said: “Paul has been very consistent throughout the competition and he impressed me again during the final.
"I moved him onto the Swindon team to see how he would adapt to playing with professional players.
"I thought he did very well. He worked extremely hard and still managed to show his ability. He deserves a chance to train with my squad.
"It will be a tough week for him but it will allow me time to decide whether he has what it takes to make it as a professional."
The boot camp sessions open on Monday January 30, and Mooney will get his start date soon. The winner will be announced at half-time during Swindon’s League Two clash with Accrington on February 25.
