BRIDGEND'S first-ever game at the Brewery Field demonstrated the potential for top flight football in the town as more than 600 spectators turned-up for a Nathaniel Car Sales Cup tie against Aberaman Athletic. The match marked the launch of competitive football at the rugby venue and attracted the biggest attendance since Bridgend’s Southern League days. Ambitious Town have returned home to Bridgend after playing out of temporary bases in Porthcawl and at University of Glamorgan Playing Fields, Treforest, well over two years since leaving Coychurch Road in February 2007. Vince Wattleworth scored the only goal of the game against the reigning Welsh League champions by netting after 17 minutes while Chris Summers, the Welsh Premier's second-highest scorer of all time, had a penalty saved. Bridgend had Grant Thomas sent off seven minutes before half-time for a second bookable offence, but still held on for a hard-earned victory.
