Heroic Taffs bow out to Bluebirds
Sunday 04 October 2009
Jonathan Coates UNDERDOGS Taffs Well performed heroically before bowing out to Welsh Premier big guns Haverfordwest.
The visitors survived a big penalty appeal in the first half when Richie Lane was brought down in the box, but the Bluebirds took the lead in the 30th minute through Steffan Williams and Paul Michael pounced four minutes from time to clinch the win.
There was a shock as Goytre United were dumped out 3-0 on their own Glenhafod Park ground by Pontardawe Town, Paul Lennihan, Gary Taylor and former Swan Jonathan Coates were on target to complete a surprise win for the visitors.
There was a dramatic tie at Garden Village, who went out 6-2 to in-form Caldicot Town.
It finished 2-2 at the end of normal time, David Rimmer and Craig Burgess on target for Garden Village.
Strikes by Jason Thorne and a David Lloyd penalty ensured extra time, with Thorne and Richard Jaratt ensuring Caldicot’s passage.
But Village finished the tie with just nine men after having Kevin Hodder and goalkeeper Mark Snell sent off.
Last year’s semi-finalists Bridgend Town marked the first Welsh Cup tie to be played at the Brewery Field with a fine 2-0 victory over Ton Pentre with goals from Vinnie Wattleworth and Mike Hartley.
In other ties involving Welsh League Division One clubs, Aberaman Athletic beat Penrhiwceiber 3-2, Cambrian & Clydach Vale were 3-1 winners over Troedyrhiw and Ely Rangers put out AFC Llwydcoed 3-2.
