Promotion setback for Afan Lido
Thursday 11 March 2010
Robbie WaltersAFAN Lido received a setback to their Welsh Premier ambitions following a 2-1 defeat against Bryntirion at the Marston Stadium in MacWhirter Welsh League division one on Wednesday night.
This wrapped up a league double for the Bridgend outfit over the Seasiders, having taken the reverse fixture by the same score back in August.
The defeat ended a 16-match unbeaten home record and left Lido still trailing second-placed Caldicot by two points, but the sides have now played the same number of games.
Athletic took a 27th-minute lead when Paul Evans converted a cross from Ricky Hodge. The Seasiders dragged themselves back on terms in the 59th minute when Scott Hillman headed home on the back post.
Lido then missed a 65th-minute penalty when ex-Bryntirion star Robbie Walters (pictured) saw his spot kick saved by former Lido goalkeeper Rory McCreesh and Anthony Rawlings went on to register a 25th goal of the campaign with the winner.
It wasn’t a good night either for leaders Goytre United, who were held to a 1-1 home draw by Barry Town.
A Richard Ryan header gave Goytre a 70th-minute lead but former Haverfordwest defender Damon Searle equalised, leaving Goytre nine points clear of Caldicot, who have three games in hand.
