Brewery boys aiming for rapid rise
Sunday 13 June 2010
Brewery FieldBRIDGEND Town are aiming for rapid promotion to the Welsh Premier after confirming Mark Sage and Darren Lyons as their new management team.
Former Garw player Sage took over from Drewe Phillips midway through last season when the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One club were at the crossroads.
Having flirted with relegation, he eventually guided them into a ninth-place finish, and the board felt he deserved to get the job on a permanent basis.
Moreover, for player-assistant manager Lyons, who was part of three Welsh League title-winning campaigns at Goytre United, it forms a first taste of management.
Lyons launched his career with Porthcawl and took in a spell with Garw before heading for Goytre.
The Brewery boys have also retained the services of experienced central defender Craig Lima as player-coach.
"The board discussed at length the management situation and although some excellent candidates applied, we unanimously appointed Mark and Darren," said chairman Steve Clarke.
"Mark deserved another crack of the whip, as he is an infectious character - and it surfaced when he got us out of trouble. They are both hungry and committed people who we feel will bring a winning mentality to the club.
"Everything is geared for success, and there is an audience out there prepared to back winning football and rugby teams at the Brewery Field.
"We are looking to play the bulk of our home games either on Friday nights or in midweek.
"Next season’s squad is currently being addressed and while there will be some new signings others will be exiting. Our aim is to bring Welsh Premier football to Bridgend as quickly as possible," Clarke added.
"Bridgend is crying out for success, and what an achievement it would be if Darren and I could be at the start of something really good," says Sage.
