BRIDGEND Town are hoping that a clutch of new signings can fire them into the Welsh Premier League. The Brewery Boys have swooped for strikers Richard Ryan from Goytre United and Robbie Walters (Afan Lido) who between them have netted 381 goals over the past six seasons. Also arriving at the club as assistant manager is Darren Lyons from Goytre, who has 181 goals to his credit in a career that has also taken in Porthcawl and Garw. Reigning champions Goytre face the prospect of finding a new team for next season after also losing Steve Conaty, John Meacock, Ian Morgan and Dale Price to their rivals. "Over the past few weeks my telephone has hardly stopped ringing with players looking to jump ship," said Goytre United manager Robert Cooke. "These are hard economic times for football at all levels, and the club has been forced to cut its cloth. "The easiest thing in the world for me to do would to also pull out of Goytre but I have decided against it. The situation has been explained to my assistants Dai Bowen and Neil Fredrickson, and they too want to see things through. "It means that we will have to go out and sign new players over the coming weeks, and the search has already begun." Delighted Bridgend boss Mark Sage says: "It’s like as if all my Christmases have come in one signing players of the goal-scoring ability of Richard Ryan, Robbie Walters and Darren Lyons. "I was looking towards a squad of 18 players for next season, and just three weeks into the close season I’m almost there. "More to the point because five of the six players were together last season, and Walters was with Goytre the year before, they know each others ways inside out." However, Sage was keen to point out that the squad faces the prospect of plenty of hard work during the close season. "I have already made it clear to the players that Bridgend will be no soft touch, and there will be no resting on laurels. "They are all here to do a job, and what we must do is hit the ground running in August. "However, on the other hand I don’t want to lose last season’s identity, as some players showed tremendous commitment in digging Bridgend out of a hole."
