| Welsh League AGM ends in confusion |

PROMOTION and relegation within the MacWhirter Welsh League has been deferred after Saturday's AGM ended in confusion. An appeal against relegation launched by third division clubs Pontyclun and Risca United resulted in the meeting at the Brewery Field in Bridgend having to be reconvened. Those two clubs, along with Garw and Pentwyn Dynamos, who hold the two automatic relegation places, Llantwit Fardre, Troedyrhiw and Seven Sisters all occupied the bottom seven places last term. The two promoted clubs are South Wales Amateur League champions Caerau and Gwent counterparts Treowen. No date has been set for the FAW to discuss the relegation debate, but the issue is now also in the hands of lawyers. When the clubs were told a year ago that the league would to be slimmed down from 54 to 48 for the 2010/11 season, it was announced that clubs which failed to meet league criteria would be relegated ahead of those holding the relegation spots. However, the management committee now claims all clubs meet the criteria, resulting in the bottom seven clubs going down, but Pontyclun and Risca are disputing the situation. In addition, the distribution of league fixtures and the league cup draw were also deferred, but a proposal from UWIC that the Welsh League should withdraw from the FAW pyramid was defeated. However, there are fears that the start of the season could be delayed while the promotion and relegation issues are resolved. |
