Leaders leave it late for victory

FIRST division leaders Bryntirion Athletic left it late to register a 2-0 home win over Caldicot Town and go three points clear of Afan Lido in the MacWhirter Welsh League.
Having overhauled the Seasiders in midweek on the back of a 3-0 win over Cardiff Corries, the Bridgend side struggled to break down the visitors' defence.
The breakthrough came on 67 minutes when Ricardo Hodge cut the ball back and Mattie Jones crossed for captain Paul Evans to head past goalkeeper James Smallcombe.
Only some good saves from on-loan Neath keeper Wyn Walters kept Caldicot at bay until Adam Carpenter chipped the ball past Smallcombe in stoppage time.
Cambrian & Clydach, who have several games in hand on the leading pack, closed the gap by one point with a 1-1 Tuesday night draw at reigning champions Goytre United, Huw Bowtell scoring for the Rhondda visitors.
On Wednesday night, former champions Aberaman Athletic slumped to an emphatic 7-0 home defeat at the hands of Pontardawe Town.
