Athletic restore 13-point lead at the top
Thursday 31 March 2011
Anthony RawlingsBRYNTIRION restored a 13-point lead at the top of Welsh League Division One with a 4-1 Wednesday night win over Pontardawe Town.
The hosts made a stunning start with two goals in the opening 15 minutes with excellent finishes from Anthony Rawlings (pictured) and skipper Paul Evans.
After a 6-0 pasting at Barry in the previous game, manager Francis Ford was looking for a good response: "We knew it was important to start well and prove that it was a one-off freak result. The players gave me the perfect response against a good Pontardawe side. It was a great start," he said.
Pontardawe got some reward when, out of the blue, Stuart Hoskins struck a spectacular angled shot from distance before half-time.
But Athletic made another good start to the second period with Rawlings heading his second from a right wing Ian Turner cross and Adam Carpenter's free-kick then deflected past Pontardawe goalkeeper Steve Reeve for the fourth.
The title is now in sight with five games remaining, although four are on the road and Afan Lido have four games in hand.
