| Ailing Ferry in merger talks |
| Wednesday 18 February 2009 |
FORMER Welsh Premier outfit Briton Ferry are in merger talks with Llansawel.A few minor problems still have to be smoothed over, but in principle the clubs are set to combine. It would lead to Briton Ferry Llansawel continuing to play in the MacWhirter Welsh League out of Ferry's longstanding base at Old Road. However, Llansawel would vacate excellent facilities in Cwrt Herbert that also contain floodlights. These modern facilities received the seal of approval off the Welsh League authorities when Llansawel were promoted from the Neath & District League back in 2006. Neither club wished to be drawn on the issue, but the merger has the blessing of both. Whether it will lead to an upturn in fortunes for Ferry, managed by Neil Morgan and Martin Parker, remains to be seen. Founder members of the League of Wales in 1992, Ferry failed to live up to expectations and were relegated after their second season in the top flight. But they won the Welsh League title at the first time of asking and remained in the league until 1997, when they finished the season with 11 straight defeats, ending their campaign with a 1-8 mauling at the hands of Llansantffraid, and were relegated again. They were relegated from the Welsh League's second division last season and only stand an outside chance of returning at the first time of asking. |
