Cambrian defeat aids Lido promotion bid
Monday 02 May 2011
Bryntirion v CwmbranA DEFEAT for third-placed Cambrian & Clydach strengthened Afan Lido's promotion bid without kicking a ball over the weekend.
The Rhondda outfit lost 2-0 at lowly Garden Village and are now eight points adrift of second spot, with one game in hand on the Lido.
Bryntirion Athletic are now favourites to clinch the title after completing their campaign with a 3-0 defeat of Cwmbran Celtic, while Lido need a maximum of two wins from their remaining three games to regain their Welsh Premier status at the expense of Haverfordwest County.
Jonathan Cuss, Anthony Rawlings and skipper Paul Evans were Athletic's scorers.
Relegation-threatened Caldicot Town shrugged off the shock resignation of joint managers Jason Pritchard and Simon Wetter by beating visiting fellow-strugglers Penrhiwceiber Rangers 4-0.
Pritchard and Wetter stood down at Caldicot by mutual consent before Saturday's game with the club putting former Newport County goalkeeper Mike Dowler in charge until the end of the season.
Pritchard was unavailable for comment, but Wetter said: "I began to believe that the players were not performing for us and I was thinking of leaving at the end of the season anyway.
"We and the club felt the best chance for it to stay up was a change of management, plus it will give it a head start for next season.
"I will now be able to spend time with my wife and three children, who have all had to miss out to football over the last few years."
