Bryntirion claim first Welsh League title
Wednesday 11 May 2011
Gavin KeepingsBRYNTIRION Athletic were crowned Welsh League champions without kicking a ball as rivals Afan Lido were held to a 2-2 draw at Penrhiwceiber Rangers.
Promoted Lido needed three points to make sure the title race went to the final game, but they were held to a shock draw in an often feisty affair which ended with both teams down to 10 men.
A total of seven players received yellow cards - six of them issued to Penrhiwceiber players - with the two captains dismissed, the home side's Gavin Keepings (pictured) getting his marching orders after 25 minutes, followed by Chris Pridham in the 73rd minute, both for violent conduct.
Lido went ahead after seven minutes with a Mark Jones penalty spot after Nathan White had been brought down by Richard Veale, but the visitors rarely tested outfit player Keston Hall who took the gloves because of a groin injury to Ryan Betteney.
A breakaway move saw the hosts equalise on 33 minutes with a good finish from Ryan Buchmann but Lido were back in front three minutes after the break through White.
Sam George deservedly gained Penrhiwceiber a share of the spoils and disappointed Lido manager Kim Bowley admitted: "They deserved their point, with such a fighting performance they deserve to stay in the division."
