Welsh League champs celebrate in Malaga
Friday 13 May 2011
NEWLY-crowned MacWhirter Welsh League champions Bryntirion Athletic are celebrating at last – in Malaga!
Manager Fran Ford and the players flew out from Cardiff to Malaga on Thursday morning – and they are back on Sunday.
Ford and his players completed their fixtures holding a nine-point lead at the top of Division One, but promotion-chasing Afan Lido still had three games left.
But Lido drew 2-2 at bottom club Penrhiwceiber Rangers in midweek – and those two dropped point meant Bryntirion could be crowned champions at last.
“This has been my most frustrating time in football,” said former Cardiff City player Ford. “We’ve had a few beers as a team to celebrate what was a fantastic season, but no champagne. Now we can crack open the champers.
“The players and I had to wait until it was mathematically certain we would be champions. Now, just in time for our trip to Malaga, we are there.
“Now it will cost our chairman, Emlyn Phillips, a little bit more in drinks for the lads.”
It is an astonishing triumph for Bryntirion, who were not mentioned when title contenders were talked about pre-season.
Bridgend Town, Bryntirion’s neighbours in the town, Afan Lido and others were tipped for glory. Barry Town, too, applied for promotion.
But Bryntirion Athletic have gone past every one of their rivals to take the title and will receive the trophy at the Welsh League awards dinner on June 10.
