Chesterfield leads Barry survival fight
Thursday 26 May 2011
Gavin ChesterfieldGAVIN Chesterfield wants to return to Barry Town as manager, if the club can be saved from extinction.
An initial £125,000 is needed by June 25 to buy the club, otherwise owner Stuart Lovering has vowed to quit the Macwhirter Welsh League.
Lovering, who bought the club in 2003, then wants further instalments of £2,000 per month for three years if a deal is done.
This season’s manager Leon Dennis resigned from the club after being told by the chairman of the sale and Chesterfield (pictured), who left towards the end of last year for a brief spell with Haverfordwest County, says: "If there’s a team to manage next year I would like to be a part of it."
Led by Chesterfield and club secretary David Cole, the Barry Town Supporters' Committee held a meeting last week to discuss a plan of action.
It was revealed that a mystery backer is willing to put forward more than half of the asking price to become a majority shareholder, leaving an estimated total of £60,000 needed, as part of a consortium, to buy the club.
A former Barry Town player, who is currently still playing football, has also been linked to a potential buyout.
"This is a very special football club that is close to our hearts, and we have a duty of care to look after our club," Chesterfield told the Barry & District News.
"We are fighting what has gone on before us and all that is going after us. Letters have been sent out to Premier League and Football League clubs asking for their support.
In a bid to find other potential buyers, fans have also taken to Twitter to raise awareness of the club's plight.
Jason Pawlin, who has helped orchestrate the Twitter campaign, said: "We are trying to get support from people around the world.
"We have had retweets from people as far afield as Brazil, Australia, America, India, France and Italy.
"We have also had support from the likes of Joe Calzaghe, Jay Bothroyd, Alistair Campbell, presenter Kirsty Gallagher and sports journalist Gabriele Marcotti.
"We are trying desperately to get a retweet from the Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard, who is originally from Barry," he added.
