Bird handed permanent role with Brewerymen
Monday 06 June 2011
Tony BirdFORMER Swansea City striker Tony Bird has been appointed assistant manager of Bridgend Town on a permanent basis.
A former Welsh Under-21 international, Bird will assist ex-Port Talbot Town centre-back Craig Lima - the duo were brought in by the MacWhirter Welsh League Division One club on a temporary basis after Mark Sage tendered his resignation last March.
Bird spent two seasons at Barry Town, notching 42 goals from 38 starts in 1996/97, before a £40,000 move to Swansea City where he scored 18 goals from 86 appearances.
He later played in the Eircom League with Patrick's Athletic and Drogheda United, signing for Carmarthen Town's Uefa Cup ties against Longford in which he did not feature.
After a move to Cardiff Grange Quins in August 2005, he left a month later for Bath City, but returned to the Welsh Premier in June 2006 with a move to Haverfordwest, later signing for Newtown, and has 51 goals from his 60 appearances in the domestic top flight.
It is thought the Brewery boys and Haverfordwest County, who have been relegated back to the Welsh League, will be the only clubs next season to apply for Welsh Premier League status.
