CWMBRAN Celtic have turned the clock back by recruiting former manager Alan Dibble to replace player-boss Ben Graham, who recently resigned because of increased work commitments as a fire-fighter. The surprise move to turn to Dibble, father of former Wales and Manchester City goalkeeper Andy Dibble, has already sent shock waves through the local MacWhirter Welsh League fraternity. Dibble was in charge of both MWL Division One side Celtic and Croesyceiliog, of Division Two, during their respective stints in the Gwent County League. He also managed Panteg while they appeared in the Welsh League, but his appointment after years away from the game will be seen by many as a massive gamble. His assistant will be Della Cheedy, a man who he both played with and managed at various clubs, who held a similar position with Graham and his predecessor Mickey Copeman. Graham and Cheedy eventually secured Celtic's top-flight status after a faltering debut Division One campaign, which saw county rivals Caldicot Town relegated. "The appointment of Alan Dibble is in keeping with the club policy of keeping the job with the club," said a Celtic spokesman. "This has seen Celtic rise the Gwent County League side to become Gwent's premier domestic club within six years. "It's very much a 'boot-room' approach and Alan has a wealth of experience and a proven managerial track record. "He is looking forward to renewing ties with coach Della Cheedy, whom has played with, managed and coached alongside." |
