Celtic one win away from being title contenders
Monday 30 January 2012
Craig SteinsCWMBRAN Celtic are just one win away from being classed as genuine MacWhirter Welsh League Division One championship-title contenders, writes Terry Daley.
Dominic Connor struck a superb late winner to earn second-placed Celtic a 1-0 victory at Ton Pentre - their fifth successive league win and a sixth in their last seven outings.
But soon there was even better news when it was discovered leaders Cambrian & Clydach had lost their 16-match unbeaten record in being beaten 3-1 at home by Barry Town.
It means that Celtic are just a point adrift of the table toppers, but having played four more games than the Rhondda Valley outfit.
However manager Gareth Morgan's side will become serious challengers if they can defeat Cambrian & Clydach, who visit Celtic Park on Saturday.
Connor smacked an 18-yard shot into the top corner after accepting a fine pass from Rakesh Patel with only eight minutes remaining.
West End twice came from behind to gain a thrilling 4-3 victory over Goytre United at Pryderi Park in division one of the MacWhirter Welsh League.
The goals were crammed into 42 minutes of non-stop action with Craig Steins taking Goytre two goals clear after just 12 minutes.
Back came the Westenders when Danny Kavanagh headed home a Sam Brown corner, while Alex Chrysanthou converted a penalty in the 22nd minute.
Three minutes later, Steins completed his hat-trick only for Kavanagh to make it 3-3 on the end of a Neil Phillips free-kick.
The winner arrived just ahead of half-time with Rob Shannon netting.
The victory allowed the Swansea side to retain third spot, one point ahead of Bridgend Town, who won 3-0 at Cwmaman Institute thanks to Sam Small, Danny Thomas and Drew Fahiya.
There was also a goal fest as Haverfordwest County went fifth on the back of 7-0 win over Pontardawe Town.
Ponty had both Niall Thomas and Kieran Howells sent off during the first half, and conceded goals to Richard Lewis and former striker Darren Griffiths.
Griffiths added two more to complete his hat-trick, while Nicky Woodrow also netted twice and Anton Owens once.
