| Mattie appointed Aberaman manager |
| Saturday 20 June 2009 |
LAST season's Welsh League champions Aberaman Athletic have wasted little time in appointing a new manager to succeed Dai Morgan, who resigned earlier this week. The Cynon Valley club have turned to veteran striker Mattie Davies, who played in the championship winning side. Davies has a wealth of experience, scoring 124 goals from 156 Welsh Premier appearances for Cwmbran Town, Barry Town and Carmarthen. The marksman has also played for Cardiff Institute of HE, Cardiff Civil Service and Grange Quins. He left Richmond Park in September 2007 to join Welsh League Ton Pentre. "Mattie has the full backing of the management committee and will be given a playing budget to set out and secure a second league title for Aberaman Athletic," says a statement from the club. Aberaman were denied promotion to the top flight after failing to meet the ground-grading deadline and decided on Monday night not to take their case to FAW arbitration. Morgan, whose company ENTO also pulled the plug on its four-year sponsorship deal, says: "The ambition of the club’s management committee does not meet my ambition. “I am not prepared to spend another season playing Welsh League football when there is no need to do that. “We should be playing in the Welsh Premier League next season. I have withdrawn sponsorship and resigned as manager and vice-president of Aberaman. "This is down to the management committee at Aberaman Athletic lacking the ambition which I have. It would have cost £410 to take the case to arbitration and I believed we could win and take our rightful place in the Welsh Premier." |
