Evans opposes pyramid restructure
Sunday 05 July 2009
Alun EvansFORMER FAW chief executive Alun Evans was an outspoken voice against proposals to reduce the numbers of the MacWhirter Welsh League to fit in with the FAW's strategic plan.
The UWIC secretary (pictured) spoke passionately at the league's special general meeting which preceded the annual meeting at Maesteg Park last week.
Evans, who failed to gain a place on the league's management committee, said that the country's ruling body were "morally and legally wrong" and further suggested the member clubs "should not accept the proposals.".
At least eight teams would be expelled, Evans said, suggesting that the league should "step outside" the pyramid system which would throw matters into chaos.
"I don't think we should be conned into following the recommendations because we are being killed by bureaucrats," he added.
League secretary Ken Tucker pointed out that other leagues had accepted the proposals and the reduction in size to 16 clubs was voted through, after a plan for it to be phased-in over a period of three seasons was defeated by member clubs.
The FAW will meet First Division clubs to explain the domestic licence criteria if they are to climb into the top echelon of Welsh football.
