Crows appeal for ex-Wilcox players
Friday 10 July 2009
Tony Wilcox CWMBRAN Town want to hear from all former players and back-room staff who served under the late Tony Willcox, who managed the club for 12 years before his death in 2003.
A Crows select side will face a Barry Town X1 at Cwmbran Stadium on Monday August 3 in a memorial match for Willcox, who also played for and managed the Jenner Park outfit.
Wilcox joined Cwmbran in November, 1991 the following summer the clubs was invited to become founder members of the new Konica League of Wales.
Consistent performances saw Cwmbran at the top of the table virtually throughout the campaign and they lost only three league games - all by 1-0 - before a Wayne Goodridge goal clinched the inaugural title with a 1-0 win at Llanelli on May 3, 1993.
In their 38 league fixtures, the Crows let in only 22 goals with goalkeeper Pat O’Hagan creating a then-British record of going 910 minutes without conceding.
By winning the league title, Cwmbran became the first Welsh club to compete in the European Champions' Cup and in the 1993-94 preliminary round, were drawn against League of Ireland champions Cork City.
Playing in front of nearly 4,000 fans in the home leg, a penalty by Simon King and two goals from striker Francis Ford put Cwmbran 3-0 ahead after just 32 minutes - although Cork later reduced the arrears with a couple of goals.
In the return, Cwmbran again opened the scoring but two late strikes took Cork through on the away-goals rule.
For the next 11 season’s, Cwmbran were either chasing Barry hard for the title or losing to them in the Welsh Cup final while Willcox led the Crows to another three European campaigns – including a two-legged UEFA Cup clash with world-famous Scottish outfit Glasgow Celtic.
Any ex-player or back-room staff member wishing to be involved in the game should contact secretary Ian Greaney on 07930142391 or chairman Carolynn Purcell on 07727 198300.
