Neath "stumped" by funding knockback
Tuesday 19 January 2010
The GnollNEATH have been taken aback by Welsh Grounds Improvements' decision to deny them grant aid to upgrade the floodlights at The Gnoll.
A club spokesman says they are "stumped" as far as meeting the March ground grading deadline for the FAW's domestic licence is concerned.
The club says they will now be forced to try and seek other sources of financial support but, had the announcement been made following WGI's November meeting to consider grant funding, then at least they would have had more time to try and resolve the issue.
The Eagles look certain to qualify for the Super 12 on league position, after a heavy investment in the playing squad this season has seen them claim seventh place in the league table, with between two and four games in hand on all the teams above them.
Neath moved to The Gnoll for the start of season 2008/9 after playing their first season following promotion at Llandarcy Park, which would have been unable to meet the criteria for the club to gain the FAW's new domestic licence.
They share the well-equipped stadium with Neath Rugby Union club and the newly-formed South Wales Rugby League club.
The Eagles were one of at least two Welsh Premier clubs refused funding by WGI, with The New Saints' application for finance towards a new stand also turned down last week.
