| Hot-shot Griffiths in contract talks |

FIVE-times the Welsh Premier's Golden Boot winner, Rhys Griffiths says he wants to end his playing career at Llanelli. Out of contract at the end of May, the 30-year-old striker has been in informal talks with chairman Nitin Parekh over a new deal for a number of months. If the Reds fail to do a deal with the hot-shot, several other south Wales clubs are certain to be interested, but Griffiths hopes he will be able to sign a fresh agreement in the next couple of weeks. "I want to stay at the club and the chairman wants me to stay, so hopefully we can come to an agreement," he told the South Wales Evening Post. "I think we're getting close, it's something we've been talking about since last summer. "I feel now that I've had enough success not to have to play year to year - I'd like to stay at the club until I finish and I don't intend to carry on playing past my best. "As long as we continue to challenge and do well, I don't see any reason to go anywhere else." The fireman has been in red-hot form in front of goal since joining from Port Talbot in the summer of 2006, notching another 30 goals this time as the Reds finished as runners-up. "I never thought I'd win it once and when I did I thought, they can never take it away from me," added Griffiths, who scored his first Llanelli goal in the Uefa Cup win in Gefle in 2006. "To win it five times in a row is amazing, but I would have swapped it for a Welsh Cup or title medal." Griffiths was yesterday named in the league managers' team of the season once again. |
