Champion Goytre end Lido's hopes
Wednesday 19 May 2010
Goytre UnitedIN a dramatic finish at the Marston's Stadium in front of a record attendance of 631, Goytre United clinched the Welsh League title.
It ended any slender hopes of Afan Lido gaining promotion to the Welsh Premier, as they ended the season in third place, after promising to challenge their failure to obtain the FAW's domestic licence if they won tonight.
Lido looked on course for victory when, with seven minutes remaining, Scott McCoubrey put them in front.
But former Port Talbot, Neath and Newtown frontman Richard French levelled for the Goyts as the game went into stoppage time and another ex-Steelman, Richard Ryan, pounced for the winner in the 93rd-minute.
Cambrian & Clydach clinched the runners-up spot in the night's other game by winning 4-3 at Bryntirion Athletic.
Second place is a remarkable achievement for Rhondda outfit C&C, who were playing in the South Wales Amateur League five years ago before winning three successive promotions to reach the second tier of Welsh football.
