| Debrecen complete Champions League line-up |
| Monday 24 May 2010 |
THE line-up of potential Champions League opponents for The New Saints was completed on Sunday when Debrecen retained the Hungarian title. On a dramatic final day, the trophy was heading to FC Videoton until eight minutes from time, as Debrecen went into their fixture at Kecskemeti aware that any slip-up could cost them the title. Their worst nightmare seemed to be coming true as they trailed 1-0 late in the second period and, with Videoton holding third-placed Gyori ETO, the championship looked set to be decided by a play-off until Gyor's Lazar Stanisic struck eight minutes from time to stun the visitors. Videoton could not find an equaliser as Debrecen limped home by a point. It will be a fifth Champions League appearance in six years for Debrecen, who became only the second Hungarian club to reach the group stages of the Champions League last season. But they failed to win a point in Group E against the might of Fiorentina, Olympique Lyonnais and Liverpool.
