Northern clubs ready to rubber-stamp plan
Monday 07 June 2010
NORTH Wales clubs are expected to join their southern counterparts in rubber-stamping the FAW's proposed fixture format for next season.
The six - Airbus, Bala, Bangor, Newtown, Prestatyn and The New Saints - are understood to be in agreement with the proposal for a 32-fixture league programme in the next campaign.
Under the plan, which was well-received by the six clubs in the south at a meeting in Carmarthen last week, the Welsh Premier will be split into a top six and bottom six after the first two rounds of games.
The clubs would then play the other teams in their group twice more to complete the programme.
The club finishing top of the bottom six (ie seventh) would take part in a play-off for the final Europa League spot with the clubs in places three to six above them.
A new format for the Loosemores League Cup will see a straight knockout format introduced, with two-legged ties up to the final, the first rounds of games being drawn on a regional basis.
The north Wales clubs are due to meet on Thursday night to discuss other matters unrelated to the fixture format, but are expected to confirm their approval ahead of the league's AGM on Saturday.
