LLANELLI manager Andy Legg has given his backing to the Welsh Premier League's new fixture format for next season. After considering a number of proposals, clubs voted unanimously for a 32-game campaign that will see each side play each other twice before the league splits into a top and bottom- half competition. The sides in the top half will compete for the title and runners-up spot, both of which carry European places. And teams in the bottom half will fight against relegation and to finish seventh, which will grant entry into a new play-off competition against sides finishing third, fourth, fifth and sixth for the final Europa League place. "Of all the options I think that was the best one," the former Welsh international told the South Wales Evening Post. "You need to have the play-offs because otherwise it's unfair. "You could finish in seventh, three points behind the team in third and be stuck in the bottom half. "I've played in play-offs in the Football League and they're great games to be involved in. "Whoever came up with the idea at the FAW deserves a pat on the back. "I was critical of the FAW over the way they handed out the licences because only seven teams had them at one stage, but they've taken their time and made the right decision." He added: "My only disappointment is that Rhyl aren't involved. "They're one of the best teams with the best support and one of the best pitches." |
