No Madeira cake for hapless City
Thursday 29 July 2010
Final scoreTEN-man Bangor City were humbled 8-2 by Portuguese outfit Maritimo in the third qualifying round of the Europa League.
With 17 minutes remaining, the Citizens were still in with a chance after half-time substitute Nicky Ward scored a vital away goal to make the scoreline 3-1.
But the goal only galvanised the Madeiran outfit into action and they hit Nev Powell's side with four goals in six minutes from Danilo, Baba Diawara, Tcho and Kanu to make the second leg at Wrexham's Racecourse in a week's time a total formality.
Earlier, City had resisted the home side's pressure for 33 minutes before Tcho scored his first of the night from a free-kick.
Within five minutes, Danilo added a second before Bangor suffered a blow in first-half stoppage time when Jamie Brewerton was sent-off for a second yellow card.
Despite conceding a third goal to Diawara six minutes after the break, Ward's goal gave City hope of keeping the tie alive.
But Maritimo's goal frenzy killed-off the tie and Fidelis added to City's woes by notching the eighth goal in stoppage time, although Eddie Jebb had the last word with another consolation goal in the 94th-minute.
