| Double disappointment for Rhyl |
| Friday 15 January 2010 |
RHYL have received a double disappointment with the news that two players will not be part of the squad for the rest of the season. Macclesfield Town midfielder Michael Thomas will not be joining the Lilywhites on loan, while the club has cancelled the contract of teenage midfielder Paul Smith (pictured). "The League Two club insisted on terms in the (Thomas) deal which gave Rhyl no other option than to reluctantly abandon plans to take on the 17-year-old," says Lilywhites Online. Thomas made his league debut on September 29 for Macclesfield in their 1-1 away draw with Burton Albion in League Two and has since made two further substitute appearances for the Silkmen with whom he will now stay. Smith's contract has been cancelled "due to ongoing disciplinary issues" on which Rhyl would not elaborate, other than to say that the Liverpudlian failed to adhere to club rules on several occasions. Smith, who began his career in the Chester City youth development set-up, made his Football League debut as a 17-year-old substitute against Rochdale in February 2009 and earned a contract at Belle Vue this season, scoring once from four (+3) Welsh Premier appearances. Meanwhile, Rhyl insist all players will be paid on time this week and say any difficulties which emerged earlier in the week are "resolved". Rumours have been circulating locally that there may have been a problem with paying out players' wages and fears of potential cash problems at the club have escalated since president Peter Parry announced he was stepping down last month. |
