BANGOR City bid to maintain their stranglehold on the Welsh Cup in Saturday's live televised quarter-final against Llanelli. In a repeat of the 2008 final which Bangor won 4-2 after extra time, the Reds will have to inflict a rare cup defeat on the Citizens if they are to keep their hopes alive. Llanelli are in good form after winning nine straight Welsh Premier matches and player-manager Andy Legg says: "It will be very difficult to go there but you have to win these games if you are to win the cup. "They have done terrifically well. To go 17 games unbeaten in the cup is a tremendous achievement, so it's going to be tough. It's going to be a battle and we realise we will have to prise the cup away from them and earn the right to move on." Llanelli are boosted by Rhys Griffiths and Chris Holloway recovering from hamstring strains, but will be without suspended defender Wyn Thomas. The Citizens hope to welcome back defender Peter Hoy and manager Nev Powell is looking forward to the game: "We have won our last six games at Farrar Road, showing superb form to delight the fans, and that gives us added confidence," he said. "But we must be aware of the dangers from Llanelli throw-ins and set pieces." The New Saints welcome Port Talbot to Park Hall for the third time this season, having already registered home wins over the Steelmen in the League Cup and the League. "Park Hall is a tough place to go but we genuinely believe we can go there and win," said Talbot boss Mark Jones. "And if we do we’ll be one of the favourites to go all the way." Close neighbours Prestatyn and Rhyl clash in a north Wales derby at Bastion Road having shared the spoils in their two League meetings this season. But Rhyl did come out on top twice in the League Cup group stage games, winning 2-1 at Belle Vue and 3-0 at Bastion Gardens. Lillies' boss Greg Strong, who is boosted by the return from suspension of midfielders Phil Doran and John Leah, says: "We’re building a new young side and team spirit is already soaring having won six of our last seven matches. "They say nothing succeeds like success and that’s the way it is for us at the minute." Bala Town have a tie against Welsh League giant killers Afan Lido, who knocked-out Gap Connah’s Quay in the previous round. "We will go there as underdogs so all the pressure will be on them," said Lido boss Mark Robinson. "We just have to concentrate on our own game for 90 minutes and intend to make the most of the opportunity." The Lakesiders lost 5-2 at Rhyl in midweek and boss Colin Caton says: "We’ve got to put it behind us and focus on Afan Lido." Photo: City beat Llanelli in the final two years ago. |
