| Stephens brace boosts Robins' hopes |
| Monday 01 March 2010 |
NEWTOWN boosted their hopes of Super 12 football next season thanks to a brace from Ross Stephens at Haverfordwest. "Ross is a quality player and it was a superb finish to win the game," said manager Darren Ryan. "It was a great result, which keeps us in touch with the teams above. "We were disappointed to concede from another set piece, but we kept going and showed tremendous spirit." Stephens netted either side of a Bluebirds' goal from Jack Christopher for the Robins close the gap on 12th-placed County to four points, with two games in hand. Airbus UK Broughton won a six-pointer at Carmarthen's Richmond Park when Josh Johnson seized on a mistake by Old Gold keeper Neil Thomas to grab the winner two minutes from time. "Football can be a very cruel game sometimes. We gifted them the winner, but Neil has saved us quite a few points this season so no fingers were pointed," said manager Deryn Brace. "A draw would have been a fair result and, with Haverfordwest losing, I would have been satisfied with that. "We have a real battle on our hands to finish in the top 10 and with Airbus the side immediately above us it was a match neither side wanted to lose." Caersws won the basement battle against Elements Cefn Druids thanks to a late goal from Mark Griffiths, while former Druid Geraint Lewis also missed a penalty, and home boss Mickey Evans was pleased to get off the bottom of the table. "It was a relief to win in the end but it should have been over before then as we had enough chances," he said. "We’ve played better this season, but we kept plugging away." Ancients joint manager Waynne Phillips was philosophical: "I was disappointed with did not hold out for a draw," said Phillips. "We did not play well, but we can’t seem to grind out results. "Caersws had the better chances and should have had the game wrapped up, but when you’re so close to a draw it’s very frustrating. "It was a double blow - as well as losing we’re now bottom of the table." Photo: Double goal scorer Ross Stephens in action at Haverfordwest [Matthew Kelly]. |
