| Lido "can compete" at highest level |
| Tuesday 02 March 2010 |
AFAN Lido manager Mark Robinson believes his side can compete if they realise their ambition of a return to the Welsh Premier. Bala Town needed two extra-time goals to see-off the Welsh Cup challenge of the Welsh League outfit on Saturday and Robinson says: "It would be great to return to Bala next season in the new super league. "That’s our aim and we showed today, despite several suspensions, that we can compete at this level. "I thought we were the better side but we could not put away the chances we created but the lads have done the club proud today." The loss of skipper Chris Pridham early on through injury and defender Shaun Goldsworthy on the hour mark proved crucial as Bala advanced to the semi-finals for the first time in their history. Lido were relegated from the top flight in 2004 in controverial circumstances when they were deducted three points for playing defender Leigh Shrimpton against Airbus when he was still serving a Sunday League suspension. Lido claimed to be unaware of the ban, but failed to overturn the deduction on appeal and finished bottom of the league. They are currently third on goal difference behind Caldicot Town in the Welsh League Division One, and need a top-two finish as well as an FAW domestic licence in order to achieve their dream of a return to the Welsh Premier.
