GEOFF Kellaway scored the only goal of the game as Aberystwyth cemented third place in the Welsh Premier with victory over Porthmadog. Kellaway scored with a back header from Ryan Fraughan's cross just before half-time to send the Seasiders four points clear of next-placed Rhyl, who have a game in hand in the race for a Europa League spot. Fraughan and Kellaway also hit the woodwork, but Jamie Rogers almost snatched a point for Port but was denied by Steven Cann's point blank save. Prestatyn and Bangor City shared the spoils in a 1-1 north Wales derby draw at Bastion Road, where Mike Parker's goal gave the hosts a half-time lead. Nicky Ward scored his first goal since joining the Citizens from Newtown to level in the 53rd-minute. The mid-Wales derby at Maesydre was virtually over as a contest inside the first 21 minutes as Welshpool were hit by a triple blast from Newtown. Striker Paul Roberts opened the Robins' account on the quarter-hour before Adam Worton and Dylan Blain both struck inside two minutes. On-loan Wrexham youngster Jordan Kane scored his first goal in the 70th-minute for the Lilywhites, but it proved to be only a consolation effort as Roberts completed his brace and Ross Stephens added another in stoppage time to give the visitors a 5-1 win. Newtown are still in 13th-place, but have now narrowed the gap on Haverfordwest to two points and with a game in hand. Photo: Paul Roberts heads Newtown's first goal at Welshpool [Kevin Hughes]. |
