Aber boss still rules out Euro talk
Thursday 18 March 2010
Aberystwyth v PorthmadogABERYSTWYTH boss Alan Morgan is still refusing to be distracted by talk of European qualification despite a six-match winning run.
The Seasiders' consolidated third place with a 2-1 win over Bangor City on Tuesday night and their Europa League destiny is very much in their own hands as they head for Bala Town's Maes Tegid on Friday night.
Four points clear of Rhyl, who have one game in hand, the Black & Greens' hopes were also bolstered by the news that fifth-placed Port Talbot had drawn at Newtown, leaving them 10 points adrift of qualification with two games in hand.
However, Morgan warned that he was looking no further than the tough trip to Bala: "Everyone keeps letting me know we can qualify for Europe, but I am still taking one game at a time," he told the Cambrian News.
"So long as we are winning games and picking up the points I’m happy.
"I cannot fault the lads, everyone is looking forward to playing in their next game, and all their hard work is being rewarded.
"Now that it looks as though we have secured a place in the top 10, I am not setting any targets, we are trying to win as many games as possible, and we’ll see where that gets us."
Morgan admitted that recent results have meant that he has had few headaches over team selection, although the likes of Graham Evans, Glyndwr Hughes, and Cledan Davies are all pushing for starting places.
"As long as the lads are winning games, then the team stays the same, but there are players on the bench who are desperate to take their shirts off them, and there is still no room for any complacency," added Morgan, who is expecting a tough test against Welsh Cup semi-finalists Bala, with Colin Carton’s side determined to finish in the top 10 at their first attempt.
"Bala are having a tremendous first season in the Welsh Premier, they are a physical side who are very difficult to play against, but we’ll be looking to keep the run going," Morgan commented.
After Friday night’s game at Bala, Aber will have just five league games left, with trips to relegation-bound Cefn Druids and Welshpool being followed by a tough run-in against Llanelli, Rhyl and The New Saints.
