| Marksman Toner joins the Lilywhites |
| Monday 26 July 2010 |
EXPERIENCED Welsh Premier marksman John Toner is the latest signing for Cymru Alliance outfit Rhyl boss Greg Strong. Toner (pictured) played for Bala Town last season, netting nine goals, after being released last summer by The New Saints, where he holds the club scoring record and was the longest-serving player, a survivor of the 2000 title winning side who played in all three of the club's championship successes between 2005 and 2007. After starting his career as a trainee with Liverpool, Toner joined Cemaes Bay and Conwy United before signing for TNS and he is among the Welsh Premier's top five all-time scorers with 161 league goals from 255 (+91) appearances. Meanwhile, Strong believes he has signed "the best goalkeeper in Welsh football" after agreeing terms with Australian Anthony Costa. The 24-year-old, who landed in the UK earlier this month on a mission to carve out a successful soccer career, hugely impressed his player-boss in Saturday’s friendly against a Blackburn Rovers XI at Belle Vue, which Rhyl lost 2-0. “He is absolutely tremendous – in my opinion he’s the best keeper in Wales,” the Lilies chief told the Daily Post. “His distribution of the ball, his handling, the saves he makes are all outstanding and I think we’ll be lucky to still have him here at Christmas. “He’s come over from Australia at his own expense and admits he sees us as a stepping stone but we’ve got no problem with that, I’m always glad to see players progress.” |
