THE chase for a play-off place and fear of relegation were the main drivers as the Welsh Premier's January transfer window closed yesterday. Virtually all the moves involved clubs in the bottom six, with those that have qualified for the Championship Conference largely satisfied with their squads. Leading quartet Bangor City, The New Saints, Llanelli and Neath made almost no moves in the market. TNS added Stockport County loanee Ryan Fraughan and young midfielder Sam Finley from Warrington Town to their squad, while Nev Powell and Andy Legg kept their cheque books in their pockets, and Neath have not announced any new signings since the welcome return of keeper Lee Kendall to The Gnoll. Prestatyn's Neil Gibson also made no market moves, but Bala Town did clinch one of the most high-profile transfers early in the New Year with the acquisition of Airbus UK Broughton striker Ian Sheridan. New Wingmakers' manager Andy Preece has been the most active shopper in the league, making no less than five acquisitions in a bid to consolidate the seventh spot that would guarantee a place in the Europa League play-offs. Strikers Mark Danks, Jonathon Bathurst and Neville Thompson are the new arrivals, alongside defender Jay Connolly and midfielder Luke Mack, all five imports from the English pyramid. Port Talbot's Mark Jones was unable to compete for the signature of Neath's Paul Fowler and bided his time until deadline day before capturing Welsh Under-21 defender James Bloom, having brought in striker Richard Greaves earlier. Carmarthen have signalled their intentions of making a bold bid to escape the drop zone under new manager Mark Aizlewood by winning the chase for Fowler and also signing hot Welsh League marksman Dan Macdonald, striker Jon Hood from Afan Lido and Neath defender Matthew Whatley. Aberystwyth's Alan Morgan has also been busy, securing the return of striker Carl Lamb to the Welsh Premier and adding Llanelli loanee Chris Llewellyn and youngster Josh Shaw up-front, as well as Bangor City wideman Mike Walsh. Newtown re-signed Callum Wright earlier this month are set to unveil two new additions this week once international clearance is received.
