| It's time the FAW stopped this farce! |

BOTH of Wednesday night's Welsh Premier League Cup fixtures were called-off due to frozen pitches only an hour before kick-off. Newtown had pronounced their game "definitely on" following a lunchtime pitch inspection at Latham Park but Prestatyn Town, who have been particularly unfortunate with late call-offs in recent seasons, were already at the ground when another inspection deemed the pitch to be unsafe. There was no reported inspection at the GenQuip Stadium, but Port Talbot Town's second leg tie against Carmarthen Town also got a very late thumbs down from the referee. With conditions well below freezing on Tuesday night, anyone with access to a weather forecast would have known that temperatures were forecast to drop to four or five below zero again tonight. In these circumstances, holding a midday inspection when the sun is at its highest is a totally futile exercise. This problem has plagued the Welsh Premier for years causing massive inconvenience for teams and supporters alike. Last year, several games were called-off late in the day, including the showpiece League Cup final at Aberystwyth's Park Avenue. The FAW is forever telling us it wants a more professionally run league. So It's time for the governing body to get a grip and instruct clubs ti organise early pitch inspections - and referees to postpone games well in advance - if in ANY doubt about cold weather or waterlogging. Otherwise fans will continue to be financially inconvenienced, disappointed and disaffected. |
