Whitfield denies Bala their first win
FORMER TNS front runner Craig Whitfield came off the bench to rescue Newtown with his goal ensuring a well earned point.
Whitfield denied Bala Town their first victory of the season with a well-taken diving header in the last minute after Josh Macauley had given the Lakesiders the lead.
Having lost their previous four league outings, Bala looked to be on course for a valuable win when Macauley drilled home a shot past keeper Dave Roberts with eight minutes remaining.
But Newtown were not to be denied and a short corner from Adam Worton on the right was played to Craig Davies whose cross was met by a the head of Whitfield.
It almost got worse for Colin Caton's side when, in the Robins' next attack, it needed a timely defensive clearance to foil Whitfield who was ready to pounce after Michael Jackson had headed on another Worton cross.
"I thought we could snatch the game but we didn't really perform today and in the end the last minute goal from Craig was probably all we deserved. But it was still a well earned point," said Newtown manager Andy Cale.
