The 2020/2021 season was a pretty strange one. The world of sports was in the middle of the global pandemic of COVID-19. All the activities were on hold until the situation improves. Even though the competitions have resumed at some point, we can see that fans weren’t allowed to be present at matches for over a year. It needs to be said that there is not a sports team that didn’t feel the negative effects of the pandemic, on more levels than we can count. However, some of them have managed to get back on their feet much faster than others. One of those that can say this season was a complete success was Chelsea.
Off the back of a tantalising Champions League triumph under new manager Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea is now seeking to continue their success into the 2021/2022 season. A German manager was a part of history repeating itself on Stamford Bridge. So far, Chelsea has managed to win the Champions League twice. In both cases, the manager who started the season was sacked in January, and the one who emerged as a solution has managed to win the European title. First, Roberto Di Matteo, now Thomas Tuchel.
Since the club has high ambitions for the 2022/2023 season, we can see that its activities in the transfer window were nothing short of exceptional. The ever-exciting transfer window has descended upon the football world which will no doubt leave Chelsea fans foaming at the mouths in anticipation for world-class players to join the club. Tuchel will no doubt use this opportunity to address certain issues that plague the club, most notably the Blue’s inefficacy in scoring goals.
So far, the club has signed only a handful of players like a second-choice goalkeeper from Fulham, Marcus Bettinelli, and Romelu Lukaku. Lukaku is once again at the Stamford Bridge in a lucrative deal worth around $130 million. The striker had an exceptional season in Inter Milano. Therefore, Roman Abramovich and Thomas Tuchel have decided to bring him back into the fold.
At the same time, we can see players like Fikayo Tomori, Victor Moses, Olivier Giroud, and Marco van Ginkel have left the team. Tomori signed for AC Milan for roughly $35 million, Moses went to Spartak Moscow in a $7 million deal, Giroud also went to AC Milan for $1.5 million, and Van Ginkel went to PSV as a free agent since his contract has expired.
As always, one only has to look at the stats to get a clear understanding of where the club’s issues lie. Last season, Chelsea fell short of their expected goal average of 1.9, netting only an average of 1.5 goals. Many vocal fans have asserted that this is due to the failed signing of Timo Werner and after comparing his output to other forwards in the league, it is hard to dispute this claim.
On the brighter side, Chelsea remains strong in all other areas. Under Tuchel, the Pensioner’s have galvanised to form solid defence and a creative, playmaking midfield. The only question then is who could Tuchel bring in to play off those chances created and bring excellent finishing to the team? Since Lukaku was brought to the team in massive transfer, many have thought that there will be no further activities in the market.
However, we can see that Chelsea has serious ideas about how all the areas in the tam can be improved significantly. That might sound strange for a team that managed to win a Champions League. Still, we are talking about a sport that constant updates are an absolute must. Therefore, nobody should be surprised by any future move Chelsea makes. Especially when we are talking about signing strikers.
Latest rumors suggest interest in 21-year-old Erling Haaland who has taken the Bundesliga by storm after netting 27 goals in 27 matches. His signature style is characterised by netting hard-to-finish chances and expert positioning inside the box. Given the aforementioned problems at Chelsea, Haaland could be exactly who they need to take their game to the next level and compete with the domestic titans from Manchester and Liverpool.
Erling Haaland has established himself as one of the most efficient strikers in the top five European leagues. Since he left Red Bull Salzburg back in 2019/2020 when he scored 16 goals in 14 games, he became a top scorer in his current club, Borussia Dortmund. In just two seasons, he scored 40 goals. In half-season, he scored 13 goals in 15 games. In 2020/2021, he scored 27 goals in 28 matches. At the first game in 2021/2022, he scored a double against Eintracht Frankfurt.
The need for a striker is increasingly important as Oliver Giroud has now been confirmed to sign for AC Milan on a two-year deal. The often-underrated Frenchman provided a strong alternative attacking style to Werner and Tammy Abraham and now his absence will leave the Blue’s with fewer options going forward with the ball. To compensate, other strikers that have been linked with the club include Antoine Griezmann, who would likely be signed on a loan deal from Barcelona, and Robert Levandowski, the recent winner of Germany’s footballer of the year award.
As always, the football faithful has taken to betting on the most likely transfer deals in hopes of proving themselves a prophet and receiving a pay-out for staking correctly. Chelsea is currently the favourites to sign Erling Haaland at 4/7, whereas the odds of Levandowski and Greizmann to Chelsea are 6/1 and 14/1 respectively. Only time will tell whether the transfer window holds good fortune for Tuchel’s reformed team. The fact that he has managed to take an underperforming Team and take them to Champion’s League glory is a testament to his coaching ability and promises only great things for the club when fresh signings come in under his direction. The club’s management hopes that the team can be competitive enough to win EPL and UCL at the same time.
